This week's Billboard 200 sees 50 Cent and The Massacre continue on to a fifth week at No. 1, successfully keeping alt. rock favorite Beck and his debuting release at the No. 2 spot.
50's monopoly has come to an end, though, with Beanie Sigel snatching No. 1 spots on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Top
Rap Albums from 50 Cent.
Starting off with the warm sounds of a woman getting blasted after receiving a Valentine, the album formerly titled the
St. Valentine's Day Massacre progresses on to kill any notion that 50 Cent has talent that rivals his hype-creation skills.
Last week, 50 Cent visited Hot 97, where he very publicly booted The Game from G-Unit, and moments later, a friend of Game's
was shot and critically wounded in front of the radio station while 50 was still on-air. That all this drama magically happened
a few days before 50 dropped The Massacre led to speculation on whether the whole thing was one big publicity stunt. After
all, if it was really just about the music, would any of that be really necessary? As if to answer the question, 50 later
downplayed the shenanigans by telling "106 & Park," "A lot of things you hear out there is being said for shock value
and not really as serious as people make it out to be."
Ironically, the hype strewn throughout the studio predecessor to the outrageously successful Get Rich Or Die Tryin' (over
11 million copies served) sets 50 up as a possessing a psuedo-soft side that you really, really shouldn't take seriously despite
it being the most intriguing part of the album.
Following obligatory made-for-radio-tracks that evoke former hits - read the Dre-produced "Disco Inferno" and "Candy Shop"
echoing Lloyd Banks' "On Fire" and Lil' Kim's "Magic Stick" respectively - the set offers tunes "for the ladies"... like the
Jamie Foxx-assisted "Build You Up" and "So Amazing" ...perfect for "ladies" who have precious few brain cells and fall for
dumb pimpshit lines. Moving right along, the tone shifts to a more introspective Fiddy predicting his death on "I'm Supposed
to Die Tonight," which Smalls, Shakur and countless other assassinated or soon-to-be-assassinated rappers have pulled off
more convincingly.
It is not until tracks such as "God Gave Me Style," "A Baltimore Love Thing," and "Ryder Music" find 50 exposing his inner
thoughts, as opposed to coming off as something other than the caricature he's assisted the media in creating of himself.
The fallout on the diss-laden and lyrically weak "Piggy Bank" plays easily into 50's attention loving mega ego, but unfortunately,
like the rest of the album, it does nothing to allow you to take him seriously or see him as an artist capable of earning
sustenance without hype. \
